"We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a commodity to which we belong we may begin to use it with love and respect." Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac |

Rockland 4-H
Over the years there has been five 4-H clubs in the Town of Rockland. There now is just one club, Rockland 4-H Club. 4-H is open to anyone from Kindergarten to one year past high school graduation. The Rockland 4-H Club meets the second Monday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Rockland town hall. Our main projects today are ceramics, knitting, photography, cooking, woodworking, and community service. For Community Service, we make cookies at Christmas for local nursing homes, a party at D & G Restaurant in Greenleaf for the elderly, single people living in the town, and for all grandparents of the 4-H members. We also help with the clean up of the town and we made a meal for the Freedom House in Green Bay. Here is a little history of the Rockland 4-H Club. It is believed that the Rockland Boys 4-H Club is one of the oldest clubs in the county. It was started in 1928 when Jim Cavanaugh requested Joseph Hoskens Sr. to try to organize a club. He was the leader for 6 years. He was followed by Robert Martin for 2 years. Joseph Hoskens Jr. followed for 3 years. His brother Ed Hoskens took over for 1 year. When Ed Hoskens went to service in 1940 John Wellens took over with 17 members. The number of members over the years went from 3 members to 26 members. This was an all boy club at the beginning. 4-H started out only for boys. In 1946 Ed Hoskens again became the general leader. Irv Peeters took over as general leader in 1952 with 12 members. The number of projects and members grew. One year the club had 14 different projects. The club was primarily a dairy club. The club also became involved in Nature Conservation and Drama. For many years the club won the Drama Festival and the Dairy Award. The club also won State Honors for Wild Life Refuge. In 1998, the Rockland Boys and their sister club, the Merry Maids combined to be the club it is today. We now have about 26 members. The Co-General Leaders are Irv Peeters and Darlene Simoens. Any one interested in joining our 4-H Club, call Darlene Simoens at 336-1036 or Mary Van Dyck at 336-5968.
